History of Walkers Group

1840

An enterprising Scotsman named John Walker attracted by the colonial outposts of the British Empire arrived in Ceylon.

1840-1854

John Walker founded the entity known as John Walker & Company, which specialized in Mechanical engineering to service the plantation sector.

1891

The firm assumed Limited Liability status in the United Kingdom as Walker Sons & Company.

1902 – 1975

With major infrastructure development going on at the time, Walker Sons & Company established itself as an expert engineering firm. While the core business involves manufacturing and repairing of tea and rubber machinery and steel structures, the Company underwent a diversification of businesses and ventured into marine and automobile sectors.

1975

Walkers were transformed into a rupee company, in keeping with the Colonization policy of the Government of Sri Lanka. Walkers was involved in the installation of the first touch button elevator in Sri Lanka, the Maskeliya Oya project and the mega Mahaweli Diversion Scheme.

1979

Rapid development at the Colombo Port provided opportunity for the firm to expand operations. Relocation was carried out moving operations from Kandy to Colombo allowing the Group to enter marine engineering and undertake some of the largest and most advanced ship repair work at the time.

1981

With the establishment of Walkers Piling Company in 1981, Walkers stepped into the building construction industry serving for both the public and private sectors.

1999

Walker Sons & Company workshop has been shifted to Siyambalape South from Colombo Port.

2009

MTD Capital Bhd acquires the Walkers Group of companies from Kapila Heavy Equipment, subsequently rebranding the Group as MTD Walkers PLC. MTD Capital Bhd acquires Northern Power Company (Pvt) Ltd and transfers the entity to MTD Walkers PLC in 2012.

2015

Walker Sons & Company Engineers re-entered to the marine sector with newly established Walkers Colombo Shipyard.

Today, Walkers CML possess a robust portfolio of infrastructure-related businesses including civil, marine, mechanical, electrical engineering works, pile construction, power generation, manufacturing tea and rubber machinery for the plantation industry and real estate.
